Women & Men
Informality, a variety of programs, plus a thought-provoking
devotional, a cup of tea and a tasty dessert (to top off our own
brown bag sandwich), and above all, an emphasis on Christian fellowship
for women of all ages and backgrounds characterises this group.
Held usually in the Friendship Room mid-day on the second Monday of
the month, this group has no budget or fixed agenda; its offerings are
forwarded to the most needy cause, locally or abroad; its "members" are
on no roll call, but know who they are simply because they come when
they wish, and they volunteer to help in many other Harcourt groups,
especially the Margaret Rose U.C.W. All women are always welcome.
This group follows the U.C.W. format of the United Church of Canada.
At the beginning of each year there is an election for various posts within
the group. A booklet is issued with names, addresses and phone numbers
of the members, (both for Margaret Rose U.C.W. and Caroline Harcourt
Women's Fellowship), and a schedule of the programs. Margaret Rose
U.C.W. meets at 1:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month in the
Friendship Room. There is tea, coffee and goodies and usually an
interesting line of speakers to inform and entertain, outeach projects,
offering help to newcomers, writing letters to shut-ins, cards to the
sick and bereaved, congratulations on occasion of weddings, births and
special anniversaries. There is a continued support for Canadian Food
for Children, the Mitten Tree for Red Lake and local appeals.
Together with Caroline Harcourt Women's Fellowship they offer
help with Funeral Receptions.
The Men's Breakfast group meets every third Wednesday at 7:15 a.m.
(and an occasional Saturday at 7:45 a.m.) for fine food and fellowship.
Men sign up to cook, help cook, or to give a presentation to the
group. An intrepid team of volunteers cleans up after breakfast.
As breakfast ends the presentation begins. It may be a book review,
about a personal interest, or whatever is on the mind of the speaker.
Occasionally there are guest speakers. The atmosphere is relaxed and
informal and there is plenty of opportunity for fellowship with both
old and new friends. Everyone contributes $3 for breakfast and the
surplus income is used to fund various projects around the churh as
well as the Chalmers Foodshelf. Our breakfasts are open to any men
who would like to join us. Check the bulletin or the Herald for dates.
Women's Spirituality is a supportive and nurturing group of about
12 women. The group meets in a spirit of friendship and mutual support to share in activities that enhance our spiritual lives. For example, in early 2007, they focussed on telling their own stories through a variety of rituals. In the fall, they began using the book, Midwives of an Unnamed Future: Spirituality for Women in Times of Unprecedented Change, by Mary Ruth Broz, Barbara Flynn and Jean Clough. The group meets the 1st and 3rd Monday evenings, breaking for the summer months.
