Men's Breakfast
The Men's Breakfast Group meets every third Wednesday at 7.15am, for fine food, fellowship, and stimulating speakers. Cooks and helpers who volunteer are organized into teams of three and scheduled for breakfast preparation several meetings in advance. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the Friendship Room and kitchen clean up. Speakers are sourced from within the group, the congregation, and from outside, so a very wide range of topics are addressed. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal and there is plenty of opportunity for fellowship with both old and new friends. Everyone contributes $4.00 for the breakfast and the surplus goes to support Chalmers Food Shelf and other church endeavours.
Our breakfasts are open to all men who would like to join us. Check the meeting calendar, the bulletin or the current Herald for dates.
Tai Chi Chuan:
The Tai Chi group at Harcourt led by our instructor, Helen Esch, meets every Wednesday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. We exercise and learn from the Shen family's Yung Set.
Bridge Group
The bridge group, established in 1977, operates on a flexible schedule where a host couple/partners entertain other members, usually one or two tables, once a month. Dessert is served prior to bridge and the evening is a mixture of fellowship and discussions of family and church life. The season, which runs from October to May, begins and ends with a potluck dinner.
Collective Kitchen
Harcourt's Collective Kitchen, made up of six women, meet each month (excluding July and August) on a Friday morning. They cook meals both for themselves and to give away to persons the church identifies as in need of a meal. Harcourt's well-equipped kitchen is an ideal facility for group cooking, and the monthly work sessions are an excellent community-building experience for the participants. For more information please call the church office.
Harcourt Independents
If you are an adult without a partner for social activities, please consider joining the Harcourt Independents for dutch-treat lunch at noon on Sundays and for other activities as scheduled. Contact Jeannette Anthony or Kay Speed through the church office. If you attend Harcourt memorial United Church, you can check for information at the Lucy Booth. Visitors and guests are always welcome! [More]
Mindstretch
We are a group where people listen to each other. We do not debate issues, we do not seek consensus and we do not attempt to educate one another. We learn by listening.
We generally have a book that relates to living the faith in to-day's world, and address a different chapter or topic each week. The leader for the day prepares 1 or 2 questions for reflection on the material. A talking stick is passed around the group and the holder of the stick has the option of speaking or of passing the stick on with no comments.
The questions lead us to connect with and share personal experiences or positions. As we consider the range of responses offered by others in the room, each of us finds that our own views and thoughts are energized and profoundly deepened. For many of us, this is a place where we encounter the Divine in our midst.
We meet for coffee and tea at 7:45 on Thursday morning and end at 9:00. Any one is welcome to drop in any time. The only real entry requirement is the will to get up that early in the dark months of winter!
